Salzburg – Austria

Salzburg is the capital city of the State of Salzburg and fourth-largest city in Austria.
The town is located on the site of the former Roman settlement of Iuvavum. Its main sources of income were salt extraction and trade and, at times, gold mining. The fortress of Hohensalzburg, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, dates from the 11th century. Salzburg’s historic centre is renowned for its Baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Salzburg was the birthplace of the 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Bavarian Alps – Germany

Coming from the east coast of the United States I had never seen “real” mountains before my first trip to Europe and the Bavarian Alps. These are truly majestic mountains with their soaring rocky peaks covered in snow. Quite the experience for this New England boy.

As long as you ae far enough away the snow avalanches are a sight to see. You hear them first and then they look like a river flowing down the face of the mountain when viewed from a distance.

Luxembourg City – Luxembourg

Luxembourg City is the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the country’s most populous commune. Standing at the confluence of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers in southern Luxembourg, the city lies at the heart of Western Europe, situated 132 miles by road from Brussels, 231 miles from Paris, and 130 miles from Cologne. The city contains Luxembourg Castle, established by the Franks in the Early Middle Ages, around which a settlement developed.

The current rulers of the Duchy are Henri and Maria Teresa.

Volendam – The Netherlands

Located on Lake IJsselmeer, you’ll find the old fishing village of Volendam in The Netherlands. It is known for its beautiful harbor and traditional Dutch architecture and ambiance.

The earthen dikes are the only thing keeping out the sea.

Tower of London – London, England

The Tower of London is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. The castle was also used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard) until 1952 (Kray twins), although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under kings Richard I, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries.
