A great memory of my parent’s retirement home in Pembroke was our weekly trip to the spring across the street from the Pennamaquan River to get fresh drinking water.
Pure cold spring water right out of the ground absolutely delicious.
Not our name, but our passion

My grandmother’s house was located on Fort Hill in Eastport and we had run through the grounds of what was Fort Sullivan when we were kids. The only remnants of the fort still extant was the crumbling powder house.
As the below postcard shows the powder house lasted for sometime somewhat intact.
Fort Hill is now dominated by Shead High School more or less on top of where my grandmother’s house was.
A restored officer’s quarters houses the Fort Sullivan Barracks Museum relocated to downtown Eastport.
Fort Sullivan was part of the coastal defense during the War of 1812 being directly across from New Brunswick, Canada. On July 11, 1814 the American garrison at the fort surrendered to the British fleet.
The Mount Desert Historical Society maintain a museum and garden in Somesville on Mount Desert Island.
You cannot miss the site as you pass the picturesque fairy tale bridge spanning the small pond next to the museum.
The small museum is surrounded by beautiful gardens wonderfully framing your photographs of the area.
The museum is open during the summer from 10:00 – 4:00.
Be sure to cross the bridge to see the 18th century Selectmen’s Building.
As you head towards Acadia National Park on US Route 1 be sure to stop at the Big Chicken Barn Books and Antiques in Ellsworth.
The bottom floor has antiques,
but I immediately head upstairs to what is Maine’s largest bookstore.
There are books for every taste wether it is Maine’s own Stephen King,
or any other genre you may be interested in. My mother would stock up on her historical fiction paperbacks, my father would head to the history section and us kids would go to the science fiction or young adult areas. In addition to books there are all kinds of magazines from comics,
to vintage magazines.
I think that half of my personal library is from this barn.
Wether it is rare 19th century historical volumes, modern paperbacks or comics you will find something that peaks your interest at a very reasonable price.
One of the most photographed sites on Mount Desert Island in Maine is the 1780 selectmen’s building and accompanying bridge in Somesville.
The building itself has been used as a cobbler’s shop, post office and museum.
On the other side of the bridge from the selectmen’s building is the Somesville Historical Societies Museum.
