Paul Bunyan Statue – Bangor, Maine

The Paul Bunyan Statue in Bangor stands 31 feet tall and was erected in 1959. Paul Bunyan was a legendary figure in American folklore who performed superhuman feats with his blue ox Babe. Bangor claims to be both the birthplace of the North American logging industry and of Paul Bunyan, alas Minnesota and other states have competing claims and statues. Maine’s own Stephen King famously brought the statue to life in his novel “It.” King himself lives in Bangor.

Eastport Post Office Historic Building – Eastport, Maine

Built in 1891 in the Italianate style the current post office building in Eastport used to serve as the custom house. This beautiful building sitting across from the main wharf area of town has long been the iconic facade as you walk along the waterfront. A major restoration was begun in 2011 as some of the stonework had been infiltrated with water and was deteriorating. The structure has now been stabilized and stands proudly overlooking the Eastport Waterfront.

We chose one at random and stopped at Lunts Gateway Lobster Pound in Trenton. The location had the main prerequisite for a good lobster shack; a large kettle outside the restaurant boiling lobsters.

The fried seafood was good and the lobster was very nice. The onion rings were thin and crispy just how we like them and the fries were fresh cut and very nice. A worthwhile stop.
