Taste Test – Universal Yums (United Kingdom)

June 2020 Universal Yums brings us to the United Kingdom. Again I wish we had an England or Scotland set instead of the generic UK but it will be interesting to see what their snacks are like.

Taste Test – Custard Cream Biscuits

After seeing the new Doctor on the television show Doctor Who enjoy her favorite biscuit, Custard Creams, given to her from the TARDIS we decided to give them a try.

The Custard Cream Biscuit originated in Great Britain circa 1908 and is the most popular biscuit (cookie) in Britain and Ireland. There is an elaborate floral design stamped into the top of the biscuit and the filling is a vanilla flavored cream.

We both enjoyed the cookies which have a taste reminiscent of shortbread with a vanilla cream filling. I enjoyed the cookie part of the biscuit but found the filling to have a lingering artificial after taste. Alex liked both the biscuit and the filling and thought they tasted like Oreos because of the filling. All an all a good snack along with a bag of Jelly Babies while watching the latest episode of Doctor Who.

Stonehenge – Wiltshire, England

“Its just a bunch of rocks?” my late father exclaimed when he first saw Stonehenge. Although my interest in history and archaeology make me more amenable to the significance of the sight it is less impressive than most people’s expectations. The UNESCO World Heritage site was believed to be constructed between 3000 and 2000 BCE. To fully appreciate the site be sure you supplement your experience with some context before visiting the stone circle itself. Back in the day there was little on site in terms of infrastructure with the exception of a parking area. There is now available a visitor center, a café style snack bar and gift shop. In the past a trip to the Salisbury Museum and the Wiltshire Museum was a must to understand the history of the site and view some of its artifacts. Both of these museums are still well worth the visit but the on-site visitor center now has displays and interpretative exhibits that will help you understand the site more. Read a brief history of Stonehenge here.
