My mother being from a fishing and cannery village in Maine we grew up with all kinds of sardines and other canned fish in the house. My sister loved sardines but I never cared for them but Alex is a big fan. We purchased this canned mackerel for him to try. Ocean’s is a Scottish company who since 1962, has been providing tinned seafood to North Americans. They achieved plastic neutrality in 2022, and source only responsibly caught seafood.
Alex liked them very much not as much as the sardines he had in Portugal but still very good
As an Hors d’Oeuvres I thought it was OK on an occasional basis
We have been wanting to try the Scottish National Dish Haggis for quite some time. Seeing this canned product be tasted on TV we decided to purchase a can. On opening the can it had the appearance of canned corn beef hash so we prepared it the say way heating it the oven. In retrospect this was probably not the best approach, without the sheep’s stomach which is the usual vehicle for cooking haggis it came out very dry.
Heated it up in the oven
We actually found it a bit bland with no strong flavors. We still need to try the authentic version.
June 2020 Universal Yums brings us to the United Kingdom. Again I wish we had an England or Scotland set instead of the generic UK but it will be interesting to see what their snacks are like.
Kent Crisps Oyster and Vinegar – I did not detect the oyster flavor but the vinegar was very pronounced. The chips were of the kettle cooked variety. Alex-6 Joe-9
Chili & Lemon Potato Hoops – mild spicy flavor but not very good Alex-5 Joe-6
Welsh Potato Crisps Lamb & Mint – once again a meat flavored chip, if you have been following my Yum blogs you know that I do not like these meat flavored snacks. The meat flavor is not particularly pronounce in this chip. Alex-7 Joe-6
