Taste Test – Explore Local (Washington, DC)

We tried a new subscription box Explore Local and received our first shipment from Washington, D.C. The box was fine but only had a few items including one non food item. The quality of all the products was top notch much better than the typical snack boxes available but at $35.00 per box for three snacks, one drink and one non food item we will probably not be continuing.

Restaurant Review – Applebee’s Grill + Bar (Epping, New Hampshire)

Alex went to his friend Evan’s birthday party and then went to Applebee’s afterwards, he said that he liked it a lot so we decided to try it out again for ourselves. This location is conveniently located off NH Route 125 in Epping. Alex ordered the same entrée he had before, the Four Cheese Mac n’ Cheese with Honey Pepper Chicken Tenders and I ordered the Double Crunch Shrimp. We both found our meals to be somewhat pedestrian. Alex felt that the atmosphere being with his friend made his first experience here much better. His view of the food taken in isolation to be standard fare. I thought my shrimp were something akin to frozen supermarket quality.

Restaurant Review – Five Guys (Derry, New Hampshire)

Take the extra time if you are craving a fast food hamburger and go to the nearest Five Guys. This location in Derry is near where Rita works and we will stop there once in a while if we don’t feel like cooking at home and just want a burger. There is no drive through but you can order on line and pick up the food which will be ready when you arrive. The little bit of extra effort is well worth it. The hamburgers are vastly superior to the fast food chains and the toppings available are top notch and varied. The fries are amazing handcut, crunchy, abundant and delicious.

Stick to the hamburgers the hotdogs were not to my taste

Chain Link Fence Innovation Historical Marker – Raymond, New Hampshire

There is a brand new New Hampshire state historical marker in Raymond located in the strip mall across the street from the Tuckaway Tavern. In 1930 Frank Mafera patented a method of forming wire fence that was appealing for residential use as it was both safer and more attractive. Prior to this innovation, chain link fencing was woven in a way that left ‘ragged or unsightly’ twists or barbs.

Restaurant Review – Captain John’s (Lowell, Massachusetts)

Captain John’s is a seafood restaurant and bar in downtown Lowell, Massachusetts. The restaurant (menu) is located on a busy street with a small parking area around the back. Accessibility is not great with a step to get into the restaurant and an inconvenient path from the parking area to the front entrance. There is outdoor seating and a popular bar area inside. Alex and I both ordered seafood platters as we had been craving fried seafood for a while. Alex ordered additional onion rings and the plate came piled high with food. Upon closer examination the majority of the plate was fries and onion rings. The fish did not seem fresh and was disappointing but the rest of the seafood was good. The majority of the plate consisted of fish and clams with only a few scallops and shrimp. We took a good quantity of food home for re-heating mostly fries, rings and fish as we had eaten the other items.
