Wildlife Sighting – Pileated Woodpecker

Alex saw this Pileated Woodpecker right outside our house in Raymond, New Hampshire. The tree he was pounding on was in our front driveway. The pileated woodpecker is quite a large bird with a distinctive red head. It is actually very reminiscent of the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker.

They are loud birds who drill into dead trees looking for carpenter ants and other insects.

Alex went out and examined the holes the woodpecker was drilling.

Winter Storm at Nubble Lighthouse – February 2020

We took a Sunday drive in February 2020 to see the Cape Neddick Lighthouse during a winter storm. Little did we know that it would be the last trip we would take for many months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We stopped at When Pigs Fly bakery and picked up some fresh bread and headed for the lighthouse. Truth to tell we did not know about the storm surge and large waves until we arrived at the lighthouse but we were able to witness a great show. Maybe it was a portend of things to come.

Taste Test – Dulse (Palmaria palmata)

Growing up we used to spend several weeks a year in my mother’s hometown of Eastport, Maine.Later in life my parents retired to Pembroke, Maine when they bought an old farmhouse on the Pennamaquan River. A favorite past time was when we would go along the seacoast shore at low tide and gather the seaweed known locally as dulse. We would dry the dulse in the sun on plastic sheets and eat it as a snack when it was dehydrated. I assume this Irish dulse that I purchased is the same species. The salty snack is definitely an acquired taste and my sister and I are the only ones in the family who really enjoyed it. I let Alex have a try, another new food for him.

I do not think it will turn out to be one of his favorite snacks! Oh well all the more for me.

Restaurant Review – Jocelyn’s Mediterranean Restaurant and Lounge (Salem, New Hampshire)

Jocelyn’s in Salem, New Hampshire offers a nice selection of mediterranean favorites in a pleasant atmosphere. The casual setting is easily accessed off Route 28 in Salem. The menu has such middle eastern staples as kibbee, shawarma, and hummus.
The hummus was a great start to the meal.
