The hotel was in the perfect location not only close to the government office where I had my appointment but also just minutes from the old town central square.

The square was surrounded by numerous restaurants and shops many of which we would visit in the next few days.

The hotel room was small with a tiny bathroom but met our needs, with everything outside it was just a place to sleep.

View from the window was not spectacular.

There were much better views from the rooftop lounge where the city lights up at night!

Taste Test – Portuguese Custard Tarts (Pasteis de Nata) – Coimbra, Portugal

The signature dish in Portugal is the Pasteis de Nata or custard tart. Anxious to try these we ordered some as soon as we arrived in Coimbra. Near the hotel we were staying at we found the Gelateria Bellini which had the tarts.

The tarts came and they looked just like what we expected with a flaky crust and a caramelized top on the custard filling.

The crust was not exactly what I expected, although very crunchy I was expecting something like phyllo dough but it was more firm in texture. The egg custard filling was sweet and very good. Alex loved them and gave them the Mark Wiens head tilt of approval.

Our first taste of Portugal was a success.
