Taste Test – Coconut

Growing up in the 60s and 70s the most “exotic” thing we could find in the supermarket was a coconut. We would buy them quite frequently as my mother enjoyed them and even at an early age I always wanted to try unusual foods. Alex had never had a whole coconut before so we decided to try one. We split open the coconut and drained out the coconut water to try.

As you can see by Alex’s expression he was not a fan! In fact the coconut was so old the water was actually a little sour. Next up was the coconut meat. Being an old coconut the meat was dry and stiffly stuck to the brown middle layer of the nut. It was very much as I remembered when I was young. Rita liked it very much and I thought it was OK. Alex again was not a fan.

We then went out and bought a fresh coconut something that was definitely not available when I was young and something I had never tried before.

This was very interesting. The coconut water was fresh and delicious refreshing and slightly sweet. I can see how people on a deserted island could live on this. The coconut itself was jelly like and easily scooped out with a spoon. Fresh coconuts are a wonderful treat and is something I will put on my shopping list from time to time.
