The lighthouse was commissioned in 1827 by John Quincy Adams and was replaced by a new structure in 1835. The lighthouse contains a museum and is surrounded by a nice park. There are picnic tables and restrooms on the shore and this is the perfect place for an afternoon picnic lunch. The picturesque rock formations are metamorphic and igneous rocks dating from 360-415 million years ago.
