Monument Square in Alton encompasses the 19th century heart of the town. Two colonial era roads intersected at this roughly triangular patch of land and it is where the memorials stand today. In addition to the veterans memorials there is a historic district surrounding the square including the town hall, the old Cocheco Hotel (now the American Legion Post #72), three commercial buildings and several private residences. The museum for the Alton Historical Society is also nearby.
