I am embarrassed to admit that when I was a child I had a fascination in pseudoscience. UFOs, crypto biology and ancient astronauts dominated my reading. I have since learned the value of evidence and a skeptical mind. Of the many UFO books I was reading the story of Betty and Barney Hill was of interest because of the close New Hampshire location.
On the evening of September 19-20, 1961 the hills were driving along Route 3 near the location of this marker when they encountered what they later described as a large cigar shaped object. The couple experienced several lost hours of memory and through hypnosis they recalled the incident.
This was the first widely reported UFO abduction case in American history. Several books have been written on the subject.

The marker can be seen on the grounds of the Indian Head Resort in Lincoln, New Hampshire.
I still wish the story was true.
