Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport to Porto Moniz Scenic Drive – Madeira, Portugal

Arriving in Madeira at the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport near Santa Cruz we had to make our way to our destination Porto Moniz on the other side of the island. We had several options before us; we could rent a car, take a bus or take a taxi. We decided on the taxi but did regret it, the cost was more than the stay at the hotel! One good thing about the trip was we had a chance to enjoy the scenery on the drive. The route to Porto Moniz carves its way through the mountains. Alex started counting the number of tunnels we went through but lost count after 30!!

After arriving in the airport we took a COVID test and went to the taxi stand.

The road winded through residential neighborhoods and farms.

Breaking through the mountains we reached the coast and started along the coastal road to Porto Moniz.

We checked into our hotel and quarantined ourselves waiting for our COVID test results. We ordered some room service while we waited. After about 8 hours after our test we received our negative results (!) and could leave our room and explore. A wonderful start to our trip to Madeira.

Cascais Portugal

Cascais is a municipality in the Lisbon District of Portugal, located on the Portuguese Riviera. Cascais is an important tourist destination. Cascais’s history as a popular seaside resort originated in the 1870s, when King Luís I of Portugal and the Portuguese royal family made the seaside town their residence every September, thus also attracting members of the Portuguese nobility, who established a summer community there. It was Cascais’s Casino Estoril that inspired Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel Casino Royale. The municipality is one of the wealthiest in both Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula. It has one of the most expensive real estate markets and one of the highest costs of living in the country and is consistently ranked highly for its quality of life. We stopped by the beach to take in the sights.

Restaurant Review – Flamingo Restaurant and Bar (Cascais, Portugal)

In the downtown section of Cascais while exploring the old town we stopped at the Flamingo Restaurant and Bar as they had some nice outside seating options.

We received with our bread some cheese and pate with olives, not really to our liking.

Alex was wanting grilled sardines ever since we arrived in Portugal, so that is what he ordered. I got my usual beefsteak with rice and beans.

Alex was very picky because of all of the bones in the fish as he did not know how to eat it. My steak and rice and beans were good if nothing spectacular.
