Pilot Crackers were a mainstay on my long distance canoe trips when I was young. These hard crackers were something we had around the house when I was growing up so when I started canoe tripping they were readily adapted to long distance trips as a bread substitute. Pilot bread derives from hardtack, an extremely dense cracker that has been associated with sailors for centuries. It is less dense than hardtack but still very hard and durable.

I found the taste very nostalgic, Alex was less impressed. Reminiscent of a very hard saltine.
