Taste Test – Asha Pops Popped Water Lily Seeds

As a amateur wild foods forager I have tried popped water lily seeds before and thought they were interesting albeit not great tasting but I was surprised to see them for sale through mail order from Asha Foods on-line. An Indian lady (Asha) and her son (Jai) started this company to bring this traditional Indian snack to the US. In India they are known as Makhana. These seeds are an integral part of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian holistic science.
The Vegan Cheese pops were good with a slight cheese flavor, the water lily seeds have a unique flavor that comes through the cheese notes.

The Dark Chocolate Pops have a strong chocolate coating and flavor that masks the water lily flavor.

The Chili Lime pops are very mild and the lime flavor is not very pronounced.

The water lily seeds do have a unique flavor and you will have to like that flavor to enjoy these snacks with the exception of the chocolate pops where the chocolate flavor is predominate. Alex did not care for the underlining flavor of the water lilies and I thought they were ok but not great, but I would recommend you give them a try if for nothing else but for the health benefits.
