Jonathan Chesley Historic Marker – Barnstead, New Hampshire

The patriot and civic leader Jonathan Chesley contracted to build a portion of the Province Road here in Barnstead. The Province Road was the main travel road from the seacoast in Durham to population centers in Grafton and Coos counties. In later life he participated in the attack on Fort William and Mary a key engagement prior to the start of the American Revolution. During the War he served as a quartermaster and held several government positions when it ended. Chesley’s burial site is located nearby.
