Doctor Who Extended Media Review – Dancing With the Doctor: Dimensions of Gender in the Doctor Who Universe

Dancing with the Doctor by Lorna Jowett delves into how gender influences stories, showrunners and characters, including the Doctors themselves, and their female and male companions.

The book is quite detailed in its analysis of gender in the Doctor Who universe both within the fiction and behind the scenes. It is broken down into sections with topics covering the Doctors themselves as well as companions and guest characters.. The showrunners are also discussed with behind the scenes decision making high-lighted. The analysis for the most part is spot on with its interpretations and opinions. The detail is quite impressive with even short-lived characters like Suzie Costello analyzed. 7 out of 10.

Doctor Who Extended Media Review – Timeslip Complete Series Guide by Adrian Sherlock

Timeslip is a British time travel series from the early 1970s. I previously reviewed the DVD of the complete series, you can see it here. This series guide written by Adrian Sherlock is a short book covering the episodes, cast and production details. Sherlock has written several of the Lethbridge-Stewart novels as well as numerous guides to many Science Fiction TV series.

The book is short but does provide adequate details of the cast and nice summaries of the stories themselves. The show was very prescient in its forward looking view of the consequences of climate change. What is unfortunate in this day and age was Sherlock’s doubt about the human cause of the climate change we are seeing in the real world. The dearth of material covering this series makes this a good resource 6 out of 10.

Taste Test – Fufu

Fufu is a traditional West African side dish that is a starchy dense dough made from ground plantains. It is used to scoop up food much like Naan bread in Indian cuisine.

Alex has always been a fan of Scarpetta so he quite liked this West African version of the Italian practice. The flavor of the Fufu was mild and a perfect vehicle for absorbing the sauce. 8 out of 10
