Coimbra University – Coimbra, Portugal

The University of Coimbra is a Portuguese public university in Coimbra, Portugal. Established in 1290 in Lisbon, it went through a number of relocations until it was moved permanently to its current city in 1537, being one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world, the oldest university of Portugal, and one of the country’s largest museums of higher education and research institutions. The university is organized into eight different faculties according to a wide range of fields, granting academic bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in nearly all major fields of knowledge, such as arts, engineering, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, medicine, sports and technologies. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Directly across from the Museum Nacional de Machado de Castro are the steps leading up to the University.

We walked past many interesting old buildings not sure what they all were maybe various departments of the campus.

We next purchased tickets to tour the Biblioteca Joanina. On our way to the library we passed several more buildings. Click on the highlighted links for in-depth posts on each component of the university.

We finally reached the library after a long walk. The route to the library begins in the basement. We watched a video about the University Academic Prison, fascinating.

We next entered the library the outer portion of which allowed photography.

The inner library does not allow photography but the attendant was sleeping so I managed to snap a few.

The square had a statue to Dom João III.

The Chapel of St. Michael is in the Manueline or Portuguese late Gothic style.

As we exited we passed a cafeteria area for students only.

Leaving the chapel we passed the law school entrance,

and other buildings and statues.

That completed our tour, well deserving of UNESCO World Heritage status.

Biblioteca Joanina – Coimbra University (Coimbra, Portugal)

The Johannine Library (Portuguese: Biblioteca Joanina) is a Baroque library situated in the heights of the historic center of the University of Coimbra. in the city of Coimbra. Built in the 18th century during the reign of the Portuguese King John V, it is part of the University of Coimbra General Library. It is a National Monument and has a priceless historical value being one of the main tourist attractions among the older monuments belonging to the university. The university is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Academic Prison is where you go if you did not return a book or had some other infraction. We could not go inside because of COVID.

The outer portion of the library pictures were allowed.

The inner library does not allow pictures, I took a few anyway the attendant was sleeping!

National Museum Machado de Castro – Coimbra, Portugal

The National Museum Machado de Castro (Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro) is an art museum in Coimbra, Portugal, named after the renowned Portuguese sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro. It first opened in 1913 and its latest renovation (2004-2012), which included the addition of a new building, was awarded the Piranesi/Prix de Rome Prize 2014. The Machado de Castro Museum is one of the most important art museums in Portugal. It is housed in the former Bishop’s Palace. This palace was built from the Middle Ages onwards roughly on the site where the Roman forum of Aeminium (Coimbra’s Roman name) once stood. The remains of this distant past, the Cryptoporticus, can be visited on the lower floors of the museum. The bulk of the museum’s collection is made up of items from churches and religious institutions in the area surrounding Coimbra. The collections of sculpture (the most extensive of all the national museums of Portugal), painting, precious metals, ceramics and textiles are especially noteworthy.

Water Museum – Coimbra, Portugal

The Water Museum is located in the former Water Collection Station. Paintings, sculptures and artistic installations are organized here. The museum was founded in 2007 to commemorate the association of the city of Coimbra with the Mondego River. The museum’s annual cultural program has events ranging from painting, sculpture, and video exhibitions, art installations, book presentations/releases, musical concerts, to seminars and themed workshops.

Birmingham Museum of Art – Birmingham, Alabama

Founded in 1951, the Birmingham Museum of Art in Birmingham, Alabama, today has one of the finest collections in the Southeastern United States, with more than 24,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and decorative arts representing a numerous diverse cultures, including Asian, European, American, African, Pre-Columbian, and Native American. Among other highlights, the Museum’s collection of Asian art is considered the finest and most comprehensive in the Southeast, and its Vietnamese ceramics one of the finest in the U.S. The Museum also is home to a remarkable Kress Collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from the late 13th century to c.1750, and the 18th-century European decorative arts include superior examples of English ceramics and French furniture. The Birmingham Museum of Art is owned by the City of Birmingham and encompasses 3.9 acres in the heart of the city’s cultural district. Erected in 1959, the present building was designed by architects Warren, Knight and Davis, and a major renovation and expansion by Edward Larrabee Barnes of New York was completed in 1993.
