Quoddy Head State Park – Lubec, Maine

Quoddy Head State Park is four miles off Maine State Route 189 in Lubec, Maine on the easternmost point of land in the continental United States. On its 541 acres the park features 5 miles of hiking trails, extensive forests, two bogs, diverse habitat for rare plants, and the striking, red-and-white striped lighthouse tower of West Quoddy Head Light. For a few weeks around the equinoxes, West Quoddy Head is the first location in the United States to see the sunrise. Quoddy Head State Park is also the closest geographic point in the United States to the African continent.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a United States national seashore which preserves the portion of the Outer Banks of North Carolina from Bodie Island to Ocracoke Island, stretching over 70 miles.

Once dubbed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for its treacherous currents, shoals, and storms, Cape Hatteras has a wealth of history relating to shipwrecks, lighthouses, and the US Lifesaving Service. Two lighthouses can be easily visited within the park; The Cape Hatteras Light Station and the Bodie Island Light Station.

The islands also provide a variety of habitats and are a valuable wintering area for migrating waterfowl. The park’s fishing and surfing are considered the best on the East Coast.

Bodie Island Lighthouse – Cape Hatteras National Seashore

The current Bodie Island Lighthouse is the third that has stood in this vicinity of Bodie Island on the Outer Banks in North Carolina and was built in 1872. It stands on the Roanoke Sound side of the first island that is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The lighthouse is just south of Nags Head. It was extensively renovated from August 2009 to March 2013.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse – Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Buxton, North Carolina)

Cape Hatteras Light is a lighthouse located on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks in the town of Buxton, North Carolina and is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The original light was built in 1802 with a new tower constructed in 1870. In ensuing years encroachment by the sea has necessitated moving of the tower inland several times.

The Cape Cod National Seashore is one of the highlights of any trip to Massachusetts. Long a summer retreat for the wealthy and poor alike there are accommodations for all price ranges on the cape. The National Seashore was created on August 7, 1961 by President John F. Kennedy and encompasses 43,607 acres on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. It includes ponds, woods and beachfront of the Atlantic coastal pine barrens ecoregion. The CCNS includes nearly 40 miles of seashore along the Atlantic-facing eastern shore of Cape Cod, in the towns of Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans and Chatham. The cold water Atlantic beaches are an ideal summer getaway but the windswept shoreline offers things to do and see all seasons.
