Burg Trifels – Annweiler, Germany

Trifels Castle is a reconstructed medieval castle at an elevation of 1,600 feet near the small town of Annweiler, Germany. It is located high above the Queich valley within the Palatinate Forest on one peak of a red sandstone mountain. Trifels Castle is on the peak of the Sonnenberg, and on both of the other two rock elevations there are castle ruins: Anebos Castle and Scharfenberg Castle. Trifels Castle has been gradually restored since the 19th century and today replicas of the Imperial Regalia of the Holy Roman Empire are on display here. Trifels Castle is also famous as the site where Richard the Lionheart, King of England was imprisoned after he was captured by Duke Leopold V of Austria near Vienna in December 1192 on his return from the Third Crusade.

Trier Germany

Trier is a city on the banks of the Moselle in Germany. It lies near the border with Luxembourg and within the important Moselle wine region. Founded by the Celts in the late 4th century BC conquered 300 years later by the Romans Trier is considered Germany’s oldest city. Renowned for its Roman ruins and historical significance this is a must visit for any amateur Roman Colonial historian.

Lake Constance – Germany/Switzerland/Austria

Lake Constance is situated where Germany, Switzerland, and Austria meet. Its shorelines lie in the German states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the Swiss cantons of St. Gallen, Thurgau, and Schaffhausen, and the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. The Rhine flows into the lake from the south, with its original course forming the Austro-Swiss border, and has its outflow on the Lower Lake where it forms the German-Swiss border up to the city of Basel.

Kaiserslautern / Landstuhl – Germany

My brother-in-law was in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany. My sister worked at the hospital in nearby Landstuhl. I made this my home base for an extended visit to Europe for several months.

Grindelwald – Switzerland

Grindelwald is a village and municipality in the canton of Berne in Switzerland. In addition to the village of Grindelwald, the municipality also includes the settlements of Alpiglen, Burglauenen, Grund, Itramen, Mühlebach, Schwendi, Tschingelberg and Wargistal. Grindelwald village is located at 3,392 feet above sea level in the Bernese Alps. The oldest traces of a settlement in the area are scattered neolithic tools which have been discovered around Grindelwald village. Several Roman era coins have also been found in the municipality.
