Coins and Currency Club – Croatia

The Coins and Currency Club selection for the month is Croatia. Croatia, officially The Republic of Croatia is a former part of Yugoslavia and located in the heart of the Balkan peninsula. Its coast lies entirely on the Adriatic Sea. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro to the southeast, and shares a maritime border with Italy to the west. Its capital and largest city, Zagreb.

Alex identified the country down to the Balkans but did not guess Croatia

Taste Test – Dorina Milk Chocolate with Puffed Rice

Dorina Milk Chocolate with Puffed Rice is a product of Croatia and is very popular in the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Some Bosnian friends introduced me to this candy bar and I developed a fondness for it. It is very different from the Nestle Crunch type bar you may be familiar with. First of all the chocolate is of a higher quality but the big difference is the rice inclusions. The rice is puffed and filled with air unlike the compact kernels most common in the US. The amount of rice is also greater with the majority of the candy bar being rice with a coating of chocolate.

Alex loved it and the three bars we bought disappeared fast

Taste Test – Marco Polo Ajvar Red Pepper Spread

Ajvar is a condiment made principally from red bell peppers and oil. It became a popular side dish throughout Yugoslavia and Albania after World War II and is nowadays popular in Southeastern Europe. It probably originated in Macedonia as the country was known for their large scale red pepper agriculture. Ajvar is made of roasted or cooked peppers. Depending on the capsaicin content in bell peppers and the amount of added chili peppers, it can be sweet (traditional), piquant (the most common), or very hot (ljutenica). Ajvar can be consumed as a bread spread or as a side dish. Ajvar has a few variations. One variation containing tomato and eggplant is called pindjur and one made with green bell peppers and oregano is called malidzano. We ordered some of the spread and tried it several ways. I t was ok on a cracker and very good on a sandwich. We added some to a stir fry and it added a nice kick.

Alex did not care for the minerally liver taste but I thought it was serviceable.

Definitely not a high level product being a pork liver concoction but ok for a picnic or with some other spreads.
