Taste Test – B&M Brown Bread

A favorite occasional treat growing up on a Saturday night was New England Brown Bread from B&M. This steamed molasses bread was traditional throughout most of New England during colonial and early American periods. The bread was traditionally steamed but can be conveniently found canned in most regional supermarkets throughout New England. Alex and Rita both thought it was OK but would not be something they would seek out, I appreciated the nostalgia and flavor. It is a perfect accompaniment to a meal of franks and beans or other New England fare.

Conveniently available in a can from B&M Beans

Remove from can and wrap in foil to heat in the oven.

Serve with a high quality butter and enjoy.

Taste Test – Kauffman’s Amish Family Foods Bread & Butter Pickles

The Kauffman Family Marketplace is a bulk food and country store located in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. Opened in 2001 by the Kauffman family they sell a variety of hand crafted food items of which many off are available through mail order. I previously reviewed their potato chip line which was excellent. A personal favorite pickle is the bread & butter variety which my mother used to make when I was a child. The store bought examples were never the same as what I remembered so I ordered some from Kauffmans. Alex was not a fan but I thought they were very close to what I remember from my childhood. With the chips and now their pickles Kauffmans is batting 100%, I recommend their products to anyone interested.

Alex trying them for the first time.
