Galen Cole Family Land Transportation Museum – Bangor, Maine

The Galen Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor is a combination museum and memorial complex. Galen Cole is an industrialist and philanthropist and was a World War II veteran. He was heavily involved in veteran’s affairs and founded the museum in 1989. The grounds of the museum is studded with veteran’s memorials and vehicles and even has a covered bridge.

The inside of the museum has displays and vehicles ranging from fire equipment to snow plows. Particularly impressive are the number of large vehicles like trucks that you do not find in many museums.

The museum has quite the eclectic collection of vehicles and the grounds are worth a visit in and of themselves.

Waterfront Walkway – Eastport, Maine

My mother was born and raised in Eastport, Maine and we would spend at least a couple weeks visiting there every summer. A favorite pastime was getting a hotdog at Rosie’s, driving onto the breakwater or visiting downtown.

During the years I spent going to Eastport the waterfront was a neglected area, that has drastically changed. A walkway has been developed to take in the great views both natural and manmade.

The most striking thing as you walk along is the statue of the fisherman.

This statue was erected when a reality TV show “Murder in Small Town-X” was filmed in Eastport. The winner of the TV show contest was Angel Juarbe Jr, a fireman from Brooklyn, New York who was tragically killed during the 9-11 terrorist attack on New York City. The statue now serves as a memorial to Juarbe.

After walking along the ocean take a stroll up Water Street and take in some of the old buildings like the Peavey Library,

the post office building,

and a number of other beautiful buildings.
