The White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire has a 32 mile section of NH Route 112 called the Kancamagus Highway. It is a premier three season travel destination and the ultimate short New England road trip. You can enter the highway either from the Conway / North Conway side or the Loon Mountain / Lincoln side.

The highway is perfect for cool weather hiking in the spring and fall, swimming in the summer and fall foliage in the autumn. If you are planning on stopping at any of the attractions along the highway you should stop at a ranger station for information and to pay a fee.

USS Albacore Submarine and Museum

The USS Albacore (AGSS 569) is an experimental research submarine that pioneered the American version of the “teardrop” shaped hull typical of most modern submarines.
The ship was commissioned in 1953 and underwent extensive testing, after decommissioning it was put on permanant display in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1985.
The sub and museum are easily acessable just of the Route 1 bypass with parking and a museum next to the sub.

An interesting piece of nautical history and be sure to check out the rest of Portsmouth while in the area.

Restaurant Review – Pier French Fries (Old Orchard Beach, Maine)

Lets face it, although extremely unhealthy french fries are exceptionally delicious. From fast food fries to steak frites at a high end restaurant all are tasty and satisfying. There is a small stand at Old Orchard Beach in Maine that serves some of the best fries you will ever have. Pier French Fries is located just before the pier in the beach and attraction section of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. The fries are freshly cut and cooked and are always crisp and crunchy with just the right combination of oil, salt and potato flavor. They come in several sizes and are a must indulgence when visiting the beach.

Old Orchard Beach – Maine

Growing up in New England we spent every summer vacationing in Maine at first with a travel trailer and later with a summer cottage. During thise summers one of our frequent destinations was Old Orchard Beach where we would spend many days sunning, swiming and partaking in the laid back beach vibe. The beach is still much as I remember it as a child, the boardwalk pier is still the centerpiece.

The beach itself has a moderate slope and is relatively shallow which is perfect for the young ones to frolic and play in the surf. You can either stake out a spot of sand or find a shady area under the pier.

Before you leave there is one thing you must try. Just prior to the entrance to the pier is a small stand called Pier French Fries. These are some of the best french fries you will ever have. Crunchy, fresh and absolutely delicious.

After a long day on the beach you can not leave Maine without trying the seafood. Our favorite post beach stop is the quintessential New England seafood shack The Clambake Restaurant in nearby Scarborough, Maine.

A very informal setting perfect for just coming off the beach in swimwear. When we were kids they used to put up large tents and awnings in the summer and we used to call the restaurant “The Tent.” I would recommend steamed clams, lobster and whatever fried seafood you like. YOu order at the window, pick up your order when it is ready and take it back to the large enclosed seating area.
There is no better way to spend a summer day than a day at the beach, beach junk food for lunch and a delicious seafood meal on the way home for dinner. A fifty year old childhood memjory that stiill delivers the same fulfilment today.
