Camden, Maine

Camden, Maine is an idyllic New England coastal town and holiday destination. The charming town was used for location filming for the movie version of the popular 1956 novel Peyton Place. A soap opera in the 60s was also produced. As you head north on US Route 1 you will first enter the town center. There are numerous shops and restaurants lining the streets with the marina just past the main drag.

As you pass the marina on the right you will get to the area where there are some spectacular hotels and guest houses mixed in with some extraordinary mansions. It is fun to take a stroll or slow drive past the mansions and marvel at the extravagance of the oceanfront homes.

My mother was born in Eastport, Maine and we took an annual pilgrimage to my grandmothers house every summer. Leaving the Boston area and pulling a travel trailer we would stop halfway to Eastport in Camden Hills State Park. We would camp in the camping area on the left of the highway. One of my favorite early memories was eating lunch when we arrived. We would often travel with my Uncle Fred and Aunt Peggy and prior to leaving Uncle Fred would pick up deli meat from the North End in Boston and we would make spukies when we got to the campsite. Access to the rocky Maine shore line is across the street.
Adjacent to the campground is the auto road up Mount Battie. Views from the top of the mountain are fantastic.

You can definitely make Camden more than a one day stopover. There is culture with the opera house and galleries, adventure with the schooners and harbor cruises and ample hiking opportunities.

One World Trade Center – New York City

Amid all the memorials to the 9/11 terrorist attack the most striking is the tower risen from the ashes of the destroyed twin towers.

If anything One World Trade Center is more impressive than the twin towers ever were. The view from across the river in New Jersey is spectacular with the single magnificent tower dominating the lower Manhattan skyline.

A short ferry ride from Jersey City, New Jersey will bring you to the foot of the tower.

As the boat makes its way to Little Cranberry Island you pass the Bear Island Lighthouse,

and see basking seals on rock ledges.

The highlight of the trip is a stop at Little Cranberry Island with its wonderful little fishing village. You pull up to a long wharf which is along side the working dock of the village. There are a number of cars parked by the dock probably used by the fishermen who are out to sea.

The small museum is a short stroll up from the dock. If your boat has a NPS ranger as your guide he will have the key to the museum and be able to open it up for exploration. If you are a passport to the National Park stamp collector be sure to ask the ranger for the unique passport stamp available in the museum.

A slightly longer stroll will bring you up into the small village of Isleford. On your left you will pass the small church and on your right will be the general store. They usually open for the cruise docking and will have fresh baked pastry you can purchase as well as soft drinks and snacks.

As you walk through the town you will see locals sitting on their front porch which could be a scene from just about anywhere in the country but then you think about the isolation and realize that this is a lifestyle few experience. Talk to the locals at the general store and try to get some understanding of what living on an island is really like.
Back on the boat for the trip back to Mount Desert Island keep your eyes open for the guilletmots a seabird in the Auk family as they frolic in the surf.

A trip into Somes Sound finishes your short cruise home. Acadia National Park is a fantastic vacation destination and there is plenty to do on land but you would be doing yourself a disservice if you did not get out onto the water. As far as I am concerned you cannot go wrong with a small boat day cruise anywhere in Maine.

Taste Test – Hormel Pickled Pigs Feet, Hocks, Tidbits

One of my favorite snacks is pickled pigs feet, hocks or tidbits from Hormel. My mother would purchase the pigs feet when I was a kid and I was the only one in the family besides her who enjoyed them. At first I would only eat the meat portion leaving the fat and skin for mom. I think it was the slimy consistency that put me off initially.

New photo by Wanderlust Family Adventure / Google Photos

The pork hocks and tidbits are completely boneless and have more meat than the pigs feet. I enjoy all three but prefer the hocks as you get both meat and skin in good proportion. When tasting the first thing you will notice is the strong acidic bite from the vinegar and then the texture. The meat is firm and has a nice pickled flavor while the fat and skin is slimy and silky soft. If you enjoy strong pickles and can get past the textural aspects of the product this is a great albeit not very healthy snack treat.

Restaurant Review – Amphora (Derry, New Hampshire)

To celebrate Rita’s birthday we decided to take in the local Mediterranean restaurant Amphora in Derry, New Hampshire. I had been to this restaurant several times but it was Rita’s first time. In the past I have always found the food and service here to be of the highest standard. The smallish restaurant is casual with a take out counter as you come in and several tables and booths to the left. The hostess seated us and the very nice waitress brought over coloring supplies for Alex and left the menus.

As is our wont we ordered several appetizers before our main course.

New photo by Wanderlust Family Adventure / Google Photos

The spanakopita was very good crisp with a good mix of feta and spinach. The eggplant frites were fantastic. Long thin strips of battered very crispy eggplant with a mix of Greek seasoning. The saganaki, melted kasseri cheese, was good.

Who doesn’t like melted cheese on warm pita bread, however it did not come out flaming like I have had it in other restaurants. The tempura calamari was a little too chewey but was tasty.
For entries I had the braised lamb shank which fall of the bone tender and served with roasted potato wedges. The shank was good but was not one of my favorites. Rita had the Psari-Sto-Filo which was haddock baked with a cream and mushroom sauce wrapped in filo pastry.

The fish did not seem fresh and Rita had to return the entree. Although somewhat disappointing I would still recommend this restaurant. The previous times I have been here I had no complaints and the appetizers for the most part were top notch. Please put this restaurant on your list for good Greek food at an affordable cost when you are in southern New Hampshirs.
