China: Beijing & Shanghai via SmarTours

One of the best valued packaged tour destinations available is the Beijing & Shanghai 10 day tour from SmarTours.  For about a thousand dollars per person airfare included you can visit one of the most historic and spectacular destinations in the world.  Arrangements for passport and Chinese Visa must be made well in advance and SmarTours requires payment in full 75 days before departure.

I started my trip from Boston where I caught a shuttle to New York for my Air China flight to Beijing.  The flight from New York adds $100 to the cost of the trip.  If you leave from San Francisco you do not have to pay the extra hundred.  A direct New York to Beijing flight of 13 ½ hours awaits you.  The food and service on the flight was good but you will have to sit through the same in-flight movie about four times!  On my flight it was Mama Mia at least it was a musical and I am an ABBA Fan.

Evening arrival brings you to the very modern Beijing airport where check in and customs were no problem.  The check in process in New York was more thorough than in Beijing.  The first Chinese meal at the hotel restaurant (Penta Hotel) and early to bed.

After an orientation breakfast it is time to make a decision you can explore on your own or take a pre-packaged optional tour for an additional fee.  If you choose the optional tour route the total cost of your trip will go up proportionally.  Since it was my first time in Asia I decided to book the tours, but if I go again I will take the independent travel route.  Our first stop on the first tour was the forbidden city.  A truly magnificent sight.  Truly a city wide scale but in fact the personal palace for the emperor of China.  After walking through the city you come to Tiananmen Square a vast open area with hawkers selling souvenirs and other items.  Many of these hawkers and beggars are in fact police or government agents on the lookout for propaganda or anyone speaking out against the government.  My tour guide told us that he would meet some of them in the police station while on business and say hello.

Back on the tour bus, as we headed for the Summer Palace.  The stone boat, the covered walkway and the great photo opportunities of the palace on the hill are fantastic.  Back at the hotel there are several options for dinner depending on your level of fatigue.   Options include fast food (KFC, McDonald’s), hotel restaurant, convenience store snacks or local restaurant.  We took the local restaurant option and sampled some authentic dishes after struggling with the menu.

The next day is back on the bus for an excursion to the Great Wall outside of Beijing.

This section of the wall is very well preserved and presents great opportunities for both climbing and photography.  If you do decide to climb up a portion of the wall one warning; the steps are very uneven.  One step may have a six inch rise and the very next step may be twelve inches! Not great if you have bad knees.  Evening we had a Peking duck dinner.

We took the optional full day tour to Xian for $500 per person flight included.  We explored the site of the tomb of the emperor Qin Shi with the terracotta warriors guarding his tomb.  There was no time to explore the ancient capital and silk road city as we flew back to Beijing for the night.  The terracotta warriors are one of the world’s great attractions that everyone must see.  The amazing thing is Qin Shi’s tomb is still yet to be excavated.   Imagine the wonders his tomb has if the warriors are just what was outside guarding it! On the way back to the bus we got a chance to stop and have our tour book signed by the farmer who discovered the warriors.

Hutongs are the old style of houses that were in Beijing and there is still a section where these houses can still be seen.  This is a fascinating tour by rickshaw through the old town.  We had lunch in the house of a Chinese family and then headed to the Temple of Heaven for an afternoon visit.

In the morning we flew to Shanghai and from the airport to the hotel we were amazed at the modern architecture.  The city looks like something out of a science fiction movie.  At night we went to a performance of Chinese acrobats and listened to the shrill high pitched singing of a Chinese opera.

During the city tour the highlight for me was eating street food at the local street market.  I tried fried baby birds and they were actually very good (tasted like chicken!).

Last up was a day tour to the city of Suzhou, Jiangsu provence with its beautiful gardens and canals.  This city and its gardens are a World Heritage Site.  There are many side excursions and stops when you take the side tours.  During the trip we had stops at a Jade factory, a jewelry factory, a rug manufacturer and a tea house.  At each of these stops there would be a restaurant on one level and a store on another.  So as you were waiting for your meal you would tour the factory and hopefully purchase some goods.

The next day it was a flight from Shanghai to Beijing to New York to Boston.  After 32 hours we were home!!

New York City Statue of Liberty Road Trip

Alex has an obsession with the Statue of Liberty.  He watches youtube videos of its construction and exclaims whenever he sees it on TV. Because of this Rita and I decided to make a run to New York for the weekend and surprise Alex.

Limited time meant we had only a day to see the statue.  We decided to try the Jersey side of the river for easier access.  This was the best decision we made.  We arrived in late afternoon in Jersey City, New Jersey and made our way to Liberty State Park.  We had still not told Alex what our destination was when we started our drive down the road paralleling the river edge.  Both Rita and I had spotted the statue out our left side but Alex still had not noticed it.  All of a sudden he let out a whoop shouting “The Statue of Liberty! The Statue of Liberty!!”

We got a couple of New York style hot dogs from a street vender and enjoyed the view from the park at the end of the road.

Before heading to the hotel we took in the Empty Sky 9-11 Memorial.  The memorial is very moving with its twin walls inscribed with the names of the New Jersey victims of the attack.

It is reminiscent of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC in this regard.  This end of the park also has spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline from across the river.  Our hotel for the night was the Rodeway Inn in Jersey City.  The hotel was clean and inexpensive albeit a bit small and somewhat noisy with sounds of the city,   The convenience and access to New York makes Jersey City a very sensible alternative when visiting New York. There are convenient ferrys to both Liberty Island and Manhattan.

It was still early so we took the ferry over to Manhattan to take in the One World Trade Center Tower.  As we made our way to the elevator we had no expectations.  I will not spoil it for anyone who has not taken the elevator to the top except to say it is worth a trip to New York just for that.  The top of the tower has the prerequisite views of the city skyline.

The next day we boarded the ferry that took us to Ellis Island and then the Statue of Liberty.  Ellis Island was our first stop.

A beautiful preserved set of buildings could not hide the empathy we felt for the millions of people who walked through the halls and corridors.

The stories of immigrants who spent every penny they had to come to the US only to be turned away for health or other reasons was heartbreaking.  My own grandfather was an immigrant from Italy in the late 19th or early 20th century.  I am not sure if he came through Ellis or some other port but the personal history hit home with me.  It makes you appreciate all the more the plights of present day immigrants as they try to fulfill their American dream during these difficult times.

Next up Liberty Island and the reason for the trip.

We purchased tickets to the top of the statue and after an arduous climb made our way to the observation deck.  The viewing deck is extremely narrow and totally packed with people.  To be honest the view is really no better than what you will see from the base of the statue and I would definitely say you could skip it and not miss out.  You can get some low angle shots from the base of the statue but the best photographs can be taken from the boat to or from the island.

A nice weekend trip but the big finding is the convenience and cost savings that can be had by staying in Jersey City and visiting New York by water cab.

Patriots Day at Minute Man National Historical Park

New photo by Wanderlust Family Adventure / Google Photos

Patriots Day is a unique holiday in Massachusetts where we celebrate the patriots who were instrumental in our fight for independence as a nation at the start of the American Revolution.  It is a three day holiday culminating in the Patriots Day celebration held on the third Monday of April on or about April 19.  In Boston the Red Sox play an 11:00 AM game and the Boston Marathon runs from Hopkinton, Mass to downtown Boston.

The Minute Man National Historical Park preserves several areas associated with the battles of Lexington and Concord which officially kicked of hostilities between the colonies and the British empire.  On Patriots Day re-enactors recreate the battles at Lexington, Concord and on the “battle road” back to Boston.
Rita and Alex went early to all three locations taking in the festivities.

The re-enactors at Lexington each take the place of a soldier or farmer that was at the battle identifying himself with that person.  This provides an interesting perspective to the re-enactment.  You can note who falls to the ground wounded or killed and know that that corresponds to the actual people on the battlefield back in 1775.  After witnessing the “battle” at Lexington green they made their way to the battle road to see further re-enactments near the Munroe Tavern.  They were lucky enough to see Andrew Zimmern filming an episode of his show Bizarre Foods.  You can see the 2017 episode titled “Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride” for a view of the festivities and catch a brief glimpse of Rita and Alex in the crowd scene.

All of the Patriots Day events whether in Boston or at the park are fun and lively.

Boston Strong!!
